A Project’s Progress
It is important to remember that a garden is constantly developing and evolving over time. If you have made the bold decision to change some aspect of your existing garden, or perhaps you are planning an entirely new garden, just remember that this is the start of an exciting process in the development or creation of a beautiful outside space.
There is always so much to think of at the start of a new garden design project. Not only is there the design itself but perhaps you may need to decide on types of paving, fencing, outside lighting and seating areas, not to mention the trees, shrubs and other garden plants too.
Your new garden will be wonderful in the long term but when it is being constructed it may well go through a period when it resembles a muddy building site rather than a stunning garden and this can be rather alarming!
How long the garden construction process takes depends on the complexity of the garden design and what needs to be achieved. Rather like redecorating your house, the garden construction necessary for your exciting new garden design may mean that your garden looks worse before it looks better.... but it will all be worth it in the end!
Once the build has been completed, and hopefully the muddy building site will have begun to resemble the finished result, the planting can begin. This is where the fun begins! I cannot stress how important it is to choose the right plant for the right place. That is where your garden designer, with their wealth of plant knowledge can ensure you create the perfect garden space. I often think of the garden design being the skeleton and the planting is the rest of the body. The planting can help to soften a linear design or can add impact to a contemporary scheme. Your garden should reflect your own style and character in the choice of plants you use.
Having chosen the plants you want to incorporate, ask your garden designer to source good healthy plants from a well-established and well-regarded nursery. When planting, give them the best start in life that you can by using good quality compost and adding a general fertiliser.
Once the plants have been planted, it can look a little underwhelming but don’t panic! You have to remember that you will need to be patient and wait for the plants to do their thing. The first year they will be putting down their roots and beginning to get going and then in the second and subsequent years they will become more established. Remember that it can take a few years before the plants reach maturity. However, your patience will be rewarded and the plants will grow into a beautiful garden, transforming your outside space.
All that hard work will have been worth it and you can sit back and enjoy your beautiful garden.
